Dr Alex Smith
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Alex is a Health and Environmental Psychology researcher specialising in qualitative and mixed-methods research design, with a focus on co-designing and developing complex health interventions with people with lived experience.
His PhD investigated the therapeutic potential of virtual natural environments for chronic low back pain self-management, employing codesign and patient-led methodologies to develop a VR nature-based intervention directly alongside people living with pain.
He joins the team supporting Helen's research at the University of Exeter evaluating the impact of a school-based play intervention on children's play and wellbeing. He brings expertise in qualitative data collection and analysis (semi-structured interviews and focus groups; analysis using reflexive Thematic Analysis, Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, and Longitudinal Qual), alongside experience in quantitative methods and mixed-methods evaluation design. Prior to academia, Alex spent three years working as an IT Technician in a secondary school, giving him a grounded understanding of school environments and the professional responsibilities that come with working alongside children and young people.
